About Sierras Grandes Protected Areas

The Sierras Grandes Protected Areas encompass a critical segment of the Córdoba mountain range in central Argentina, stretching over diverse landscapes that range from rocky summits and steep cliffs to deep valleys and pine forests. The highest peak, Cerro Champaquí, reaches 2,790 meters (9,153 feet) and is the tallest mountain in the Córdoba province. The region boasts a unique ecology, housing endemic plant species such as the Araucaria angustifolia and serving as habitat for wildlife including Andean condors, guanacos, and pumas. The area's deep valleys and natural springs have long attracted indigenous peoples and later settlers, whose cultural influences blend with the wilderness appeal. Outdoor recreation here is dominated by hiking, with several popular trekking routes leading to panoramic summits and secluded lagoons. Climbing is also prominent due to the range's sheer rock faces and varied terrain. Additionally, the area offers bird watching, camping, horseback riding, and fishing in cold mountain streams. The protected status of much of the range, including provincial and national parks, preserves its fragile ecosystems and restricts development. The Sierras Grandes' combination of accessibility from regional cities such as Villa Dolores and Villa Carlos Paz with its pristine alpine environment draws naturalists, adventure seekers, and cultural tourists alike. Visitors can explore well-marked trails to spots like Champaquí Base Camp, the moss-covered Los Venados valley, and the breathtaking Piedra Blanca formations. The region is also known for its seasonal wildflower blooms and scenic vistas ideal for photography and nature study, providing a vibrant and peaceful outdoor retreat throughout the year.
